So take care to run the install script under /compat/linux/bin/sh,
perhaps by

freebsd-sh$ /compat/linux/bin/sh path_to_install_script

or maybe even

freebsd-sh$ /compat/linux/bin/sh
linux-sh$ path_to_install_script
