This is really old. Did you try upgrading??? (current version of IOS is 
11.1 (something) I think).

I had a similar problem with a couple of SGI Indys running IRIX 5.3 and a 
Cisco 1003. Does it lock up on any kind of transfer or just specific 
applications? Our problem was with a specific application. ftp for 
example would work fine... The weirdest of all is that pinging the other 
side would release it. Did you try pinging the other side while it's stuck???
