I haven't changed any settings in the kernel relating to consoles, so can't
answer that part of your question.  I simply have a /boot.config file 
containing exactly the string "-P", which forces the console to the serial 
line, if no keyboard is present.  It works just fine.  Take a look at 
man 8 boot for more details.
