Hi Joe,
   Thanks for getting back to me, and for the straight-forward answers.

I'm happy with what you've advised here (I'll take a closer look at the -f 
switch for portupgrade, too), and go with the following:

Log off of X
cd /usr/ports/x11-wm/sawfish
portupgrade -f sawfish

Hopefully that'll sort out the "Sawfish not running error" I keep getting, so 
that I can go ahead and complete the setting up of gnome / Sawfish desktop env.
