Subject: BTX crashes on install (MSI Speedster / MS-9632 + T2050)

The board is a MSI Speedster A4V, with a Mobile Core Duo T2050 CPU,
Intel 945GT+ICH7R chipset. I've tried most permutations of the BIOS
settings (ACPI, onboard lan/vga/sound, ACPI etc), I've even tried a
Core Solo T1300 and different sticks of memory. I've tried different
install CDs and different readers (ide, sata and usb) - and they all
work on other hardware. No luck with updating BIOS either.
All my googling indicate that both i945 and Core Duo should work-ish
with both freebsd and linux. Board 'works' under Windows, but not
Linux 2.4 or 2.6 either - is it possible to get this running somehow
or is my best bet to return the board?

Pointers will be appreciated!
