I have also had this problem with a Promise ATA100 controller and a
Plextor 1610T, and also in Linux. In Windows, I don't even have an
option to enable DMA as the card's drivers claim it is a SCSI card...

In the Promise FAQ, there is mention of not having the option to enable
DMA (in Windows) because the card determines which devices should use
DMA; and I also recall that they suggest only using hard drives on a
Promise card, as other devices will work but not optimally (I can't
remember exactly -- check their site for the real wording).

My ultimate solution was rather drastic -- got a new motherboard, with a
VIA 8233a controller (my old board, ABIT KT7A, seemed to have a buggy
686B chipset that stole way too much CPU time even in DMA mode, and the
Promise card caused its own problems...)

Mike.
