This is question not a suggestion.....

Would this be a good time to tar up :
/usr/home
/var/mail
/etc
and whatever else is important and valuable;
and the bite the bullet and fresh install 4.3 from CD
make sure you have a good secondary MX, so no new mail is lost
a couple of hours downtime on a saturday evening is preferential to several
days of pulling teeth

Not sure what's screwed up your 3.5.1 upgrade.  You'll have more luck
doing a binary installation; there are other hoops to jump through
going from 3.5.1 to 4.3.
