oh, but i do!, the above happens after having done about 80% of the make process
and i can't figure out where it's trying to write, im running with
export MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/r+d/obj/x-dev
and
cd /r+d/5.4/src; make  TARGET_ARCH=amd64 buildworld
