Upgrading from 4.3-RELEASE to 4.4-RELEASE gave me this exact same
error.

The odd thing is, my kernel config was called CUSTOM.
Once I named it something else, the compile completed fine...

It was a kernel identical to GENERIC, only with ident CUSTOM rather
than ident GENERIC.
