It's the section of the manual where it belongs. There are some commands 
that appear in more than one section of the manual, with different 
meanings. For example:

acct(2) - enable or disable process accounting
-----^
This section is about system calls - so this is the man page for a 
system call named acct.

acct(5)                  - execution accounting file
-----^
This is the section on file formats, so this is a man page specifying the 
format of a file.
