If it's a PCI modem, can't you use 'pciconf -vl' and use the 'chip'
value printed for your modem?  If that works, all we have to do is
update the FAQ.

Note that you need a fairly recent 4.4-STABLE box, since the -v option
was only merged to pciconf(1) on 2001/11/27.
