I don't see the Adaptec card getting probed in your dmesg... I see the onboard SiS controller (atapci0 with ata0 and ata1), and a HighPoint card (atapci1 with ata-2 and ata-3), and the errors I see are coming from the ata-2 and ata-3 channels, which are on the HighPoint controller. -Gary On Sun, 28 Aug 2005, Robert Ken Francis wrote: > I have failures like the below: > > ata2-master: FAILURE - SETFEATURES SET TRANSFER MODE status=51 error=4 > > What do I do to fix these failures? I need some basic advice from people using a bit older hardware, as I want to build a fairly simple server with FreeBSD. sorry if these prove to be stupid or trivial questions, but as it's old hardware I thought people might be using this (or used it) and can give some useful advice about how real-life is nowadays. Most online resources are with older software.... Main purpose will be hosting some websites, mailserver, fileserver, mysql with not too heavy load, on a 1MBps connection. Now it is physically impossible to get a network cable there, so I need 802.11g, which leads me to using only FreeBSD 5.x or 6.x. I got my card working under 5.x using ndisulator, with WEP 64bit (128bit doesn't seem to work, or I don't get the idea how). I have to choose between TrendNet and D-Link cards using TI chipsets (probably the same, afaik), and I tested the TrendNet successfully as mentioned. Who has experience with 6.x, can PSK be used, as WEP is not the best alternative for a server, is it? And if yes, should I expect other issues with the 6.x, as it's still beta... I would also need a basic management tool for my wifi, is there anything out there? And if I should go for 6.x, what branch should I go for (sorry, I'm totally new to 6.x, maybe this question is stupid :) It's not a production server, but I don't want it to fail too often, either... The router supports PSK, and the server will be probably in the DMZ or set up as a "Virtual PC" (seems to be a fancy name for a NAT :) and with port forwarding, as I only need some ports (I have to decide if I will go for the router hardware security or for ipfw) second: I will be using an older motherboard, ABIT BP6 with two celerons 400MHz (suits my needs), who can point me on how to use the full functionality of the onboard IDE RAID. It's a HighPoint HPT366, do I have any tools for it, driver is ok and supported? Any issues? I could go for a SIL3112 SATA, but this is just a waste of hardware considering the overall performance of the end-system, so I'd rather use the onboard if there are no big issues. Do I even have to recompile for support for this controller, or can I install directly to it? Oh, and I guess the dual processor config on this mobo is fully supported, right? Anybody knowing a good tutorial on how to get the most out of this old hardware? I'll probably go with the max of RAM, so I'd like to compile a fast kernel also (I know how to do that, only asking if there are some special options for these old procs, I never actually worked with dual proc that old :) last, do you think using a normal older SCSI controller (lets say Adaptec AHA-2940 S76 Ultra-SCSI, or smtg else, I have a few lying around) with some 2GB Quantums can be a faster solution? can I do software RAID or smtg with them, as I have a few of these disks, but the controllers are none RAID controllers. You will want to rebuild your kernel for SMP which is well documented and rather simple. If you must use wireless then you may find attaching an access point to the server then bridging to be another suitable solution. I beleieve realtek wireless cards have drivers, i recall openbsd praising them for open specs... Good move from the biggest nic card manufacturer. This device consists of the cordless device and an USB adapter, which appears as a keyboard and mouse to the system. Whenever I plug in the USB part, I get: Aug 29 17:48:18 kirika kernel: ukbd0: Logitech USB wireless Mouse & Presenter, rev 2.00/35.00, addr 2, iclass 3/1 Aug 29 17:48:18 kirika kernel: kbd1 at ukbd0 Aug 29 17:48:18 kirika kernel: ums0: Logitech USB wireless Mouse & Presenter, rev 2.00/35.00, addr 2, iclass 3/1 Aug 29 17:48:18 kirika kernel: ums0: 3 buttons and Z dir. However, whenever I do this, the laptop's keyboard is unusable. It just accepts no input anymore. Instead when I press a "blank screen" button on the cordless device, the letter 'b' is entered (that key is used by presentation programs to blank the screen, when in presetation mode). If I pull out the USB device everything is working as usually. Looke like the USB keyboard is taken as the man input device and the internal atkbd is disabled. Any ideas how to fix this? So 5.x will never support PSK. I've asked Dan too: is WEP really that bad? or is it just crackable, meaning a determined FBI agent could crack it? (this is an example, all you Man In Black please relax :) your idea with the AP seems reasonable. U mean I get an AP that connects me to my WLAN, and from the AP use an UTP cable to the server, that has a normal 10/100Mbps card in it? did I get this right? I have no experience whatsoever with such a setup, can I then actually configure my Ap to use PSK on the WLAN, so that my WiFi is encrypted properly? and then because it is a normal LAN connection for the server, this would not need to have 6.x? for my WiFi card I used the ndisulator, so I'm ok with the drivers, and besides I don't want/can't buy any more hardware, all that I was talking about is already there and ready to be used... but no realtek wifi NICs whatsoever :( tks, ANdrei --- The problem with our world is stupidity. I have no money to put into this server, the hardware mentioned is already in my workroom, lying around, but I can't afford to buy more. So I can use any hardware from like 15 motherboards, lots of NICs and so on (all old :), but this is just what I thought to be the most appropiate for building a server, mainly because I considered 2 processors of 400MHz to be better then 1 of 800MHz, and because I considered that this motherboard is probably designed more carefully and for enduring more, being a board designed for servers, even if an old model... The wifi cards I have are both 802.11g, I would use 802.11b if I had one, but I don't :) And besides I thought that once u have a 802.11b in your 802.11g-only network, the data throughput will be a bit slowed down on all clients (not down to 11MBps, but not as good as without the 802.11b client in ur network) - can anyone confirm this (we had a review on this in our CHIP Magazine, a few months ago). > I can't comment here, as I only use WEP, and have only used 6 on a > workstation. well, any impressions appreciated: what did the 6 "feel" like? rock-stable or whacky? :) another big question: is WEP really that bad? I'm not sure. I've personally never used RAID under FreeBSD. I would guess that it might support i already via a module, but I'm not sure. The board I have is rock-solid. It's been in service here (it replaced an Abit BX6 with a p2/300) for almost a year, never skipped a beat. Some have told me that some revisions of the board had problems, but mine seems to be the same that they mention, and I've had none. Both boards were superb. Abit seems to be a very good manufacturer (or they were, I can't comment on any of their newer boards, which I'd imagine may be worse). > >Use the SMP kernel (or put options SMP into yours) and it should work. > >Most options in GENERIC should suit you fine re: processor options. >=20 > I'll check with the handbook on this one :) >=20 > >If it works, why not? I'm not sure what to do about this. Someone in FreeBSD questions said it was related to atapi or SCSI. The 1200A card has a Highpoint HPT370 chip on it. I can see atapci1, ata2, and ata3. Maybe the hard drives cause these driver failures? I can try to take out atapifd and see if the errors go away, which means I will have to build a kernel. Does anyone know what causes the below FAILUREs? Based upon the actual error messages, I would examine the cables and speed settings first. My interpretation of the errors is that the card is having trouble finding a speed setting that will work with what I assume are ancient hard drives. The 42MB and 100MB drives I would guess are old, and don't speak DMA, or even a high PIO mode, and therefore are giving trouble when the card tries to set what the card thinks is a reasonable transfer speed setting. Out of curiosity, what happens if you were to unplug all the older drives from the card, and boot with only the newer hard drive attached and on (and maybe the CD drive, that should be fine as well)? If the errors go away I would then assume that it is a speed setting issue with the older drives, and then look further in that area. You might want to include Soren (the ata code maintainer) a little further down the line (if you search the -current mailing archives for ata, you'll find his e-mail address, I don't have it handy), if it does turn out to be a setting, which he may be better able to explain than I, being that he understands this stuff much better. Who knows, it may be something that needs a sysctl tunable, or maybe an alteration to the code, but some more troubleshooting should be done. Trying out the cables and that stuff first means you don't have to delve into a custom kernel at the moment, so try what's easiest first, and go from there. -Gary On Tue, 30 Aug 2005, Robert Ken Francis wrote: > Thanks for responding. That was the final word in HPT´s favor over Promise, when we were looking for RAID cards. I don´t know if HPT366´s drivers work on recent releases but, if so, and if hptmv(4) doesn´t already support it, all you´ll have to do is to copy Highpoint´s drivers to a floppy and load´em at boot prompt, then it should go without much ado. BTW, I had forgotten it, but I´ve had very nice experiences with FBSD up to 5.2.1 on hardware as old as Pentium MMX on a PC-Chips M5xx o_O (THAT impressed me) or dual-Pentium 200MHz (P54C) on a server MB with Intel chipset, so you shouldn´t have big issues; for SMP, I would just suggest to remove "cpu I386" and "I486", since you won´t need them. As for soft RAID, I guess you´ll need to test it and see if your hardware won´t complain... we used Linux soft IDE-RAID 0 on that dual-P200 here and performance was not short of irritating. Though your hardware is better, according to a recent thread on -perf md(4) was significantly slower than Linux´s equivalent (don´t rebember what is it). I hope that´ll help you. ;) Have luck, Tulio G. da Silva --------------090709040305060809080500-- From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 31 15:22:53 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6832B16A420 for ; Wed, 31 Aug 2005 15:22:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tuliogs@pgt.mpt.gov.br) Received: from mail.pgt.mpt.gov.br (mail.pgt.mpt.gov.br [200.157.62.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A367E43D46 for ; Wed, 31 Aug 2005 15:22:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tuliogs@pgt.mpt.gov.br) Received: from [10.0.0.136] (516e.pgt.mpt.gov.br [10.0.0.136]) by mail.pgt.mpt.gov.br (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j7VFMn0v072733 for ; Wed, 31 Aug 2005 12:22:49 -0300 (BRST) (envelope-from tuliogs@pgt.mpt.gov.br) Message-ID: <4315CBDE.5070007@pgt.mpt.gov.br> Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 12:25:18 -0300 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Tulio_Guimar=E3es_da_Silva?= User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org References: <000001c5adbf$83af7500$0a2e567e@monster4c> <20050830203359.W73590@kerplunk.tbe.net> In-Reply-To: <20050830203359.W73590@kerplunk.tbe.net> Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------000806020204090505070402" X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Re: Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A card supported? I would trust that too. These are really ancient hardware, maybe 10+ years old, and certainly not DMA-compatible. Since they all fall back to PIO0, it´s better to force them to not higher tahn PIO-2 or 3. It´s certainly not a controller issue, since Highpoint chips are well supported. ;) Note: according to Seagate´s reference guide (last updated 5/13/91 o_O for this disk), the ST3120A is plain ATA-bus, what means it´s probably only PIO-0. I wouldn´t expect better for the Conner. Was I so wrong? i can use a Duron 1000MHz but on a cheap SiS board with only SDRam support, too, and integrated video/LAN, will this be much better? Shall I risk that, as the board is for sure not as stable as an Abit...? > For the wireless, most of the cheap 802.11g Access Points change their > mode (and of course all the clients also) to 802.11b if there is a > 802.11b client. You can setup the Access Point to handle only 802.11b > or 802.11g clients, but that depends of the Model. I have a non-cheap one, it lets 11b and 11g co-exist it seems... but I don't want to use 11b anyway, as I'll do some file-transfers (to and from the server, over the wifi) and it will take ages for a 500MB file to transfer on 11MBps maximum speed... so that's why I need 11g, anyway... > WEP (64 and 128 bits) are very insecure against modern attacks > (some methods can broke 128 bits keys in ~10 minutes, even without > traffic). Check out an IP Sec or WPA-PSK to secure your wireless network > if you care :). I care, but for WPA-PSK I have to go to FreeBSD 6.0, right? will the STABLE be the right option? 5.x will never support WPA-PSK, it seems... anybody any sidenotes/impressions on using WPA-PSK? works out of the box? :) > I have a HighPoint HPT374 in a server and works very fine (with the > propietary drivers :-/). Look in the HighPoint page if they support > FreeBSD for that controller, or the HARDWARE.txt as somebody else > suggests. been contacting them, they said they didn't write the driver for this controller, but the FreeBSD people did... So no proprietary driver, but it is supported by the ATA driver, only there were some issues with using more than 2 disks on the controller (that supports up to four). can anybody confirm if it was fixed or not? I'll try it after my exams, if nobody is using it :) anyway, to the HPT-using-people out there: if you have an older controller, that's not listed on the suuport page of HighPoint anymore, just ask the support guys from HPT by email for everything, insist a bit, and they'll help you out. I even got some latest beta BIOSes and a beta XP driver (never released officially) from them, after 2 mails... they're quite nice and well informed, so thumbs up for HighPoint. tks for your replies, and sorry I answer only today. See my dmesg below for details. I'm > guessing that SET FEATURES means I have set some features? I think the ata guy is at sos@FreeBSD.org? > Well, I would expect the SET FEATURES bit to be in the ata code itself, as it's trying to probe your hardware, and set the features for that drive so it will work with the card. The code is probably having the card go through a bunch of possible feature subsets for what is attached, and probably can't find anything that fits for that particular hardware. sos@ seems to be about right. I hate to say this, as I'm horrible with older hardware myself (if it still is functional I still try to use it somewhere), but it might be time to give up the ghost on the older drives, and mount them on the wall as museum pieces... :) I don't know what you could do with the settings on the Adaptec card to try to set lower speed settings manually, as I only have one card myself of that type, and it's in a production box at the moment. If you want to keep those drives around, I'd see if you can find an older IDE controller to hang them off of, as you'll probably get nowhere with keeping it on the newer cards. And sos might tell you that it's too old for him to support it in the new code framework (but I'm putting words in his mouth, I apologize), or he may try to work up some patches. If you want, I can ship you a couple "newer" 6 and 8GB drives so you can retire your relics... :) -Gary > Thanks, > Rob > > Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. > Copyright (c) 1979, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 > The Regents of the University of California. Maybe the Duron can be faster than your pair of Celerons, but the only way to know it is benchmarking both systems with the applications that you want to run. I am not saying that your pair of Celerons are crap or something like that, I just want to remark that the performance boast with a SMP system isn't linear, spreading jobs across processors is also a job, and can be very intensive :) Also I am taking about performance, reliability is another issue that your SMP motherboard wins without doubt. As I say before, the pair of Celerons are a very good option. > > WEP (64 and 128 bits) are very insecure against modern attacks > > (some methods can broke 128 bits keys in ~10 minutes, even without > > traffic).
