Yes, yes, 1,000 times yes. I've only asked for this about that number
of times. :) The reaons for the upgrade being desirable include several
bug fixes, *vastly* improved efficiency and several new features.

The ntp stuff is for the Network Time Protocol Version 4, whereas xntpd
is NTP version 3.

Both xntpd and ntp come with DES by default, the -export versions of
both usually appear shortly after the newest release. Failing that, my
understanding is that it's not tough to delete the DES stuff from the
source.

There are several factors regarding the contrib'ification. First, xntpd
3-5.93a should be contrib'ified for current and once it's stable (which
shouldn't take long at all) that version should be backported to
-Stable. There are several reasons. As has already been commented on,
the NTP 4 stuff is a bit, shall we say tempermental. The NTP 3 stuff
however is rock solid, and .93a is a huge improvement in that it
compiles 99% clean with only one tiny warning even with -Wall defined.
Also, once the xntpd stuff is contrib'ified upgrading to NTP 4 at some
point in the future will be trivial. For now a port of NTP 4 is a good
thing.

The other exciting feature of the newest versions of (x)ntpd is that
they've gone from a man page format to an html format for all
documentation. I'm not sure how y'all would like to deal with that,
however I would be willing to assist with updating the man pages we have
to go with the new stuff. I would also be willing to help with other
issues related to bringing the update in as needed. I've done a lot of
research on NTP and have deployed a world-wide time server network
including a lot of freebsd servers so this is a topic near to my heart.
:)

Glad it's getting noticed,

Doug
