I recently upgraded my trusty old 486 from wd to ata and my disk I/O throughput (dd if=/dev/r[wa]d0c of=/dev/null bs=64k) dropped by ~25% - from ~3.2MB/sec to 2.4MB/sec. This strikes me as excessive, though I haven't had the time to work out why it's happening.
