Edit your '/etc/ttys' file. The line for ttyd0 (COM1) should
look like this:

# Serial terminals ------------------------------------------------
ttyd0	"/usr/libexec/getty std.38400 	vt100	on  secure
                                   |      |      |   |
				   |	  |	 |   if you want to
				   |	  |	 |   log in as root
                                   |      |      |
				   |      |	 enabele terminal
                                   |      |
				   |	  terminal Type
				   |
				   speed setting
