ksh93 on Solaris 2.5.1 gives:

val: 'foo bla fasel blubb '

val: 'foo bla'
val: 'fasel'
val: 'blubb'

This is almost the correct output.

IMO, the correct output is

val: 'foo bla fasel blubb '

val: 'foo bla'
val: 'fasel'
val: 'blubb'
val: ''
