However, not sure what else I can do. Seems X thinks these modules really must be loaded. Don't know why. Perhaps these three are required by some othe module? Or perhaps these are really necessary for X to work? >Also, in the xdm log, is the use of the file Xsetup_0 unusual? > >xdm info (pid 843): sourcing /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 No, that is normal. However, on amd64 I see 2 more lines: xdm info (pid 1029): sourcing /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 xdm info (pid 1029): sourcing /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/GiveConsole xdm info (pid 1038): executing session /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession So it seems xdm is stuck on Xsetup_0 and does not get to GiveConsole at all. Xsetup_0 just launches xconsole: % cat /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 #!/bin/sh xconsole -geometry 480x130-0-0 -daemon -notify -verbose -fn fixed -exitOnFail % which does come up fine. Thanks for the hints Anton
