I'm also seeing this. Although the build.xml peered with the erroneous 
update.c mentions gcc33 in the echo, the following line begins:

 	<apply executable="gcc" ...

and the stock system gcc doesn't know about declarations at the first 
point of use (which is what's "wrong" with update.c)

This is on a very recent -stable.
