This is really simple.  Build and install the mail/sendmail port.  Then
modify /etc/mail/mailer.conf and change /usr/libexec/sendmail/sendmail to
${PREFIX}/sbin/sendmail (PREFIX is usually /usr/local).

If you're worried about "make world" times, you can even set
"NO_SENDMAIL= true" in /etc/make.conf.
