It's really not all that complicated to change hostname(1)

t23# grep hostname /etc/rc.conf
hostname="t23.smithi.id.au"
t23# hostname
t23.smithi.id.au
t23# hostname boofar
t23# hostname
boofar
t23# csh
boofar# exit
exit
t23# hostname
boofar
t23# hostname t23.smithi.id.au
t23# hostname
t23.smithi.id.au
