It does seem like there's a routing problem on the FreeBSD side.  I've had
the identical problem when I had a point-to-point Ethernet with an OS/2
box and a FreeBSD machine.  It's all a matter of routing.

I'd suggest checking out the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at
http://www.freebsd.org/ and see if that gives you any insight.
