For future reference, ports-mgmt/portmaster handles this kind of
upgrade much better; the default behaviour is to ensure all
dependencies are up to date before updating.  All of my portupgrading
woes disappeared once I switched.

(BTW, portmaster also has a maintainer unlike portupgrade)
