You keep saying that this patch makes no sense. And it does fix the error
message that used to be printed before all the time, and also it does fix the
memory leak.

How can one reconcile your opinion that "it doesn't make sense" with the
obvious positive practical consequences that have pretty good theoretical
explanation?
