OK, I checked on every reference that anyone gave me (and I got a lot of
private replies giving many different pointers), the best is at
http://www.mapblast.com/mblast/index.mb. This one gave location finding
that was easily as good as the best of the others, it's finest detail maps
were by far the best of any of them (better, not merely "as good"), and
they were the only ones to cover the world (although their site says US,
ask for any city you want, anywhere in the world, as a zoom start point,
and it seems to work). You can control how fast you zoom (which most
other sites wouldn't let you), and the interface was intuitive enough so
that I had no problem at all using it, to find any spot in the world.
