Oh dear, not this topic again. Google is your friend. You'll find that bragging about how long one's server has been up for is a perennial favourite on the web and around newsgroups. One link that is a favourite amongst BSD'ers is: http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html The counter argument to all this "my uptime is bigger than yours" tomfoolery is that any well managed server will be regularly upgraded, run through power-on tests and so forth --- at least once a year --- so uptimes stretching back to the pre-cambrian indicate a lack of proper maintenance. Whatever. The port installation should have generated a new /etc/mail/mailer.conf file for you, redirecting everything to the newly installed /usr/local/libexec/sendmail Plus have you looked at the /usr/local/etc/rc.d/{sendmail.sh.sample,sm-client.sh.sample} scripts, customized them as necessary and renamed them without the .sample suffix? [Remember that with sendmail 8.12.x you're going to be running two instances of sendmail: the sm-mta and sm-msp processes] > Is 4.4R too old to use 8.12.6 port? It's possible, but I'd guess unlikely. Ports are only officially required to work on supported releases, recent versions of 4-STABLE and 5-CURRENT. However, they will generally work on slightly older versions, like yours. sendmail-8.12.6 itself should run fine: the problem would probably be with incompatibilities during the port installation. > Is port install supposed to update rc.conf? As I understand it, you should use the /usr/local/etc/rc.d startup scripts to start the ports version of sendmail, and disable sendmail within /etc/rc.conf. If your system is sufficiently up to date that /etc/rc.sendmail has all the correct knobs for starting up sendmail MTA and MSP stuff then you could use that mechanism instead, but in that case, you've probably already got sendmail 8.12.x in the base system, so why install the port? (Well, to answer my own rhetoric, unless you want the Cyrus SASL stuff: see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=0+4913+/usr/local/www/db/text/2002/freebsd-security/20020922.freebsd-security). In either case, installing the port won't make any modifications to /etc/rc.conf. > Is port install supposed to utilize mailwrapper. Yes. This looks to me like the source of the problem. The install fell over before it had completely finished. Something to do with installing the m4 sources etc. under /usr/local/share/sendmail. You need to get that install to run to completion before you can properly use the new sendmail. What does: pkg_info -g sendmail\* say? What is there in /usr/local/share/sendmail ? If it's not there at all, have you tried: mkdir -p /usr/local/share/sendmail first and then retried the installation? That really shouldn't be necessary: probably something that broke between 4.4 and 4.7 --- if it's reproducible on an up to date system, it would be worth a PR. If this is the only sendmail version you've ever installed from ports, then you may find the use of FORCE_PKG_REGISTER helpful: cd /usr/ports/mail/sendmail make install FORCE_PKG_REGISTER=yes That will over-write a previously installed sendmail package without quibbling, so use carefully. There are two ways of approaching this problem. The first and more common mechanism is to use natd or the like to do port forwarding from your internet visible gateway to your internal hosts. You've got essentially the gist of it --- quite why it isn't working for you is unclear from what you've written, but it's probably a trivial misspelling or a fubar in your firewall ruleset or some such. This approach works very well for HTTP, but it will be difficult (if not impossible) with FTP due to the use of dual data and control channels. The other method you might consider is to install a reverse proxy on your gateway. It's just like using a web cache / proxy on your border network, except that instead of proxying your requests from inside your net for data from outside, it proxies external requests for data from inside. Something like Squid (ports/www/squid) should fit the bill, although there are many other candidates in the ports tree. Googling for 'squid reverse proxy' turns up plenty of hits amongst which you should find plenty of information about how to set it all up. I have backups for that ;-). I have two questions, one related to optimal stripe size and one to gathering statistics. I have a freshly cvsupped 4.7 stable currently installed on a 30g single disk I propose to add a second 30gb disk as a mirror of this. and to add two new identical disks (maxtor fdb-9 120gb) and create a striped volume for data on those. I propose (maybe) to create a single striped volume but...... what stripe size? Reading the various vinum docs and looking at some of the samples I found lying around the web left me a touch confused. There are two categories of files on the data disk, largeish ( 4-5mb) which are most frequently accessed but the overwhelming majority of files are much smaller (<4k) but not accessed so frequently. So, is it better to try and optimize for the most frequently accessed, or the filesize that comprises the bulk of file accesses? or better to create two volumes with different stripe sizes. In either case, if anyone has any concrete recommendations, I would welcome them. When the new hardware arrives, (about a week), I will probably run some tests with varying stripe-sizes and see what happens but any pointers towards likely good starting points...... To: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG This is my plan: 1. Set up an empty 40G drive with vinum. 2. Copy what I need from another 40G drive to it. 3. Erase the second drive and set it up with vinum, too, so that I have a mirrored set containing the original data (or most of it, anyway). Is this possible? If so, I'm not at all clear about how I should go about it. In a trial run, I had no problems with setting up the empty drive with vinum, but then writing a second configuration to the same drive as an experiment resulted in a non-functioning system. (Further research confirms this was the wrong thing to do.) I originally assumed I could simply follow the instructions for replacing a failed drive, but after reading them, am puzzled about how (if it's possible at all) to "create the impression" of there having been a drive that now needs to be rebuilt. Can anyone offer some suggestions? Many thanks, Matt __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. (never used a cable). These lines will interrogate your actual settings for the dc0 interface each time: # onet=`ifconfig dc0 | awk '/inet / {print $4}'` # omask=`ifconfig dc0 | awk '/netmask / {print $6}'` # oip=`ifconfig dc0 | awk '/inet / {print $2}'` For your inside interface, this will work: # inet="192.168.10.0" # imask="255.255.255.0" (or - "0xffffff00") # iip="192.168.10.1" As for divert, I believe that should be 8668. First off when i minimise Xine the last frame from an mpeg being played stays on the desktop on top of everything, i.e. I have a square box with a frame of an mpeg covering most of my desktop so i cant see anything behind it. Secondly Xine does tend to crash every now and then, maybe this is normal? Im not sure. The following is a basic spec of my PC: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 512MB DDR RAM 40GB HDD ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO D-Link DFE-530TX NIC Has anyone experienced something similar or has an idea of how to solve it? The most common issue I've seen is that the default apm line in both the GENERIC and LINT files compiles apm0 support in, and then DISABLES it: # Power management support (see LINT for more options) device apm0 at nexus? disable flags 0x20 # Advanced Power Management ^^^^^^^ So not only do you have to make sure you've added device apm0, you also have to delete/comment the "disable" part: device apm0 at nexus? Once I did this and rebuilt my kernel, I've had no problems powering down on several AMD Athlon/Pentium III/Pentium 4 systems. PicoBSD is great if you want to do what PicoBSD is geared for, but many people can think of their own custom systems that they would like to have burned on a CD-ROM. Not "pico" small, but still much less than the full-blown freebsd, and does not require a working hard disk to run. For those people, PicoBSD is *too* successful at being small. Besides, if you had a nice book with an accurate and detailed info on how to do build such systems, then you wouldn't have to waste any time searching those web sites... :-) Another example of where this information is useful is for hardware like the small, diskless boxes at http://www.soekris.com/. One of the CS grad students set up freebsd on a box like that, and gave a presentation of it at a local Unix users group, and everyone was very interested in what he had done. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Dec 8 14:48:42 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F08D37B401 for ; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 14:48:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from shana.tecpro.com (66.83.154.17.nw.nuvox.net [66.83.154.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 019B343EA9 for ; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 14:48:41 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from admin@shana.tecpro.com) Received: by shana.tecpro.com (Postfix, from userid 80) id 83D143CFC8; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 17:48:40 -0500 (EST) Received: from 66.83.118.62 (SquirrelMail authenticated user admin) by shana.tecpro.com with HTTP; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 17:48:40 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <2462.66.83.118.62.1039387720.squirrel@shana.tecpro.com> Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 17:48:40 -0500 (EST) Subject: correct syntax for compiling drac for use with postfix From: To: X-Priority: 3 Importance: Normal X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: SquirrelMail (version 1.2.6) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Sorry for the dumb question, but is the proper syntax for installing drac on a machine running postfix as follows: make install -DWITH_POSTFIX=yes Thanks in advance! I pulled the hard drive out of the box, and tried to format it in a Windows machine. It occurred to me that the drive had not been formated and therefore had not had data written to all parts of the disk. Half way through the format I got an 'Unsafe removal of device' message, and upon reboot the drive was TOTALLY dead. It would be nice if FreeBSD had a SMARTY utility - it would have allowed me to possibly detect this failure. I've been told that work is underway to write one and it might be ready for 5.0. Given the increase in size of the kernel in recent years, it's difficult to get a kernel on a floppy, let alone other files. CDs are hardly any more expensive, and you can put a complete system on them. > Besides, if you had a nice book with an accurate and detailed info > on how to do build such systems, then you wouldn't have to waste > any time searching those web sites... :-) > > Another example of where this information is useful is for hardware > like the small, diskless boxes at http://www.soekris.com/. This is one of the things that I was thinking of, from a software side, but my primary interest was net booting with NFS-mounted file systems. I'll think about the CD system as well, but it seems that this should be something that the FreeBSD project offers as an additional CD. It could replace the fixit floppy, which has become almost useless. Otherwise, it won't know whether a file has been deleted from the original machine, or is a local modification on the duplicate. Given that you're not using cvs, you'd probably do better with rsync for this job. You could also use other tools that can keep metadata, like dump(8) or even use the incremental facilities of Gnu tar. There's a fair discussion of stripe sizes in vinum(4), about 200 lines long, under the heading "Performance considerations". I can't do better than that in less space. Can anyone offer > some suggestions? In the case of a failed drive, Vinum knows all about it, just not where it is. In your case Vinum doesn't know about the new disk; you have to tell it. Do that with an incremental configuration file just describing the new objects. I'm attaching a draft from the upcoming 4th edition of "The Complete FreeBSD". Take a look at it and tell me if anything's unclear. Greg -- When replying to this message, please copy the original recipients. If you don't, I may ignore the reply or reply to the original recipients. For more information, see http://www.lemis.com/questions.html See complete headers for address and phone numbers Adding plexes to an existing volume ___________________________________ At some time after creating a volume, you may decide to add additional plexes. This is only possible for concatenated plexes. For example, you may want to add a plex to the volume myvol we saw above, putting its subdisk on drive b. The configuration file for this extension would look like: plex name myvol.p1 org concat volume myvol sd size 1g drive b To see what has happened, use the recursive listing option -r for the list command: vinum -> l -r myvol V myvol State: up Plexes: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p0 C State: up Subdisks: 1 Size: 512 MB P myvol.p1 C State: initializing Subdisks: 1 Size: 1024 MB S myvol.p0.s0 State: up D: a Size: 512 MB S myvol.p1.s0 State: empty D: b Size: 1024 MB The command l is a synonym for list, and the -r option means recursive: it displays all subordinate objects. In this example, plex myvol.p1 is 1 GB in size, although myvol.p0 is only 512 MB in size. This discrepancy is allowed, though it isn't very useful by itself: only the first half of the volume is protected against failures. As we'll see in the next section, though, this is a useful stepping stone to extending the size of a file system. Note that you can't use the setupstate keyword here. Vinum can't know whether the existing volume contains valid data or not, so you must use the start command to synchronize the plexes. Adding subdisks to existing plexes __________________________________ After adding a second plex to myvol, it had one plex with 512 MB and another with 1024 MB. It makes sense to have the same size plexes, so the first thing we should do is add a second subdisk to the plex myvol.p0. Do this in much the same manner: sd name myvol.p0.s1 plex myvol.p0 size 512m drive c After adding this subdisk, the volume looks like this: | | | | | | 0 MB | myvol.p0.s0 | | | |volume | | |addressvol.p1.s0 | myvol.p0.s1 space | | | | 1024 MB | | | | Plex 1 Plex 2 | | myvol.p0 myvol.p1 | | | Figure 17-7: An extended Vinum volume It doesn't look too happy, however: vinum -> l -r myvol V myvol State: up Plexes: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p0 C State: corrupt Subdisks: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p1 C State: initializing Subdisks: 1 Size: 1024 MB S myvol.p0.s0 State: up D: a Size: 512 MB S myvol.p0.s1 State: empty D: c Size: 512 MB S myvol.p1.s0 State: stale D: b Size: 1024 MB In fact, it's in as good a shape as it ever has been. The first half of myvol still contains the file system that we put on it, and it's as accessible as ever. The trouble here is that there is nothing in the other two subdisks, which are shown shaded in the figure. Vinum can't know that that is acceptable, but we do. In this case, we use some maintenance commands to set the correct object states: vinum -> setstate up myvol.p0.s1 myvol.p0 vinum -> l -r myvol V myvol State: up Plexes: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p0 C State: up Subdisks: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p1 C State: faulty Subdisks: 1 Size: 1024 MB S myvol.p0.s0 State: up D: a Size: 512 MB S myvol.p0.s1 State: up D: c Size: 512 MB S myvol.p1.s0 State: stale D: b Size: 1024 MB vinum -> saveconfig The command setstate changes the state of individual objects without updating those of related objects. For example, you can use it to change the state of a plex to up even if all the subdisks are down. If used incorrectly, it can can cause severe data corruption. Unlike normal commands, it doesn't save the configuration changes, so you use saveconfig for that, after you're sure you have the correct states. Read the man page before using them for any other purpose. Next you start the second plex: vinum -> start myvol.p1 Reviving myvol.p1.s0 in the background vinum[446]: reviving myvol.p1.s0 vinum -> vinum[446]: myvol.p1.s0 is up some time later l command for previous prompt 3 drives: D a State: up /dev/da1s4h A: 3582/4094 MB (87%) D b State: up /dev/da2s4h A: 3070/4094 MB (74%) D c State: up /dev/da3s4h A: 3582/4094 MB (87%) 1 volumes: V myvol State: up Plexes: 2 Size: 1024 MB 2 plexes: P myvol.p0 C State: up Subdisks: 2 Size: 1024 MB P myvol.p1 C State: up Subdisks: 1 Size: 1024 MB 3 subdisks: S myvol.p0.s0 State: up D: a Size: 512 MB S myvol.p1.s0 State: up D: b Size: 1024 MB S myvol.p0.s1 State: up D: c Size: 512 MB The message telling you that myvol.p1.s0 is up comes after the prompt, so the next command doesn't have a prompt. At this point you have a fully mirrored, functional volume, 1 GB in size. I was at a local installfext yesterday (http://installfest.auug.org.au/), and a number of people were interested in doing diskless booting, either for reasons of economy or reliability. I'm currently about to finish the manuscript of the fourth edition of "The Complete FreeBSD", and I was wondering if there was enough interest in this topic for me to include it in the book. If *you* are interested, please let me know. I'll make a decision depending on the amount of feedback I get. Greg -- When replying to this message, please copy the original recipients. It's at > > http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/freebsdtogo/ I've spent the weekend experimenting with the various methods of making bootable FreeBSD CDs. LiveCD died with an unlogged error just before it was ready to build an ISO. The project at http://www.bsdtoday.com/2002/March/Features646.html went farther, but booted the CD into sysinstall. freebsdtogo has worked the best so far, although there were some missing boot files that needed to be copied. After that, it actually produced a bootable CD. I'm going to work on it some more, and try to work up at least a checklist. In the meantime, here are my notes: (Note to potential users: some of this is speculation and reading between the lines. Consider it untested. Lawrence, please feel free to include this with your project if you like.) CD to /home and untar the freebsdtogo archive. It'll create a togo directory. "Bundles" are directory trees of changes that will be made to the target tree before the CD image is created. There's a "default" bundle in the /home/togo/bundles directory. The "copy" subdirectory contains files which will be copied over existing ones. For example, the file copy/etc/rc.conf would be copied over the sysinstall-generated rc.conf. Packages (ports-type *.tgz packages) placed in the packages subdirectory will be installed to the target tree before the CD is created. The patch directory contains patches that will be made to the original files, and the postpatch.sh script will be run afterwards. rwmounts is a list of directories that will be created as memory filesystems. You'll probably want to either modify the default bundle directly, or copy it, modify it, and give the bundle a new name. Basic procedure: Update or create bundle as described above. cd /usr/src make buildworld cd /usr/src make buildkernel qcp -pR /boot /home/togo/trees/bin make iso (add BUNDLE=mybundlename if you're not using default) The ISO file ends up in /home/togo/build/default/cdimage.iso, or /home/togo/build/mybundlename/cdimage.iso if you've used a different bundle name. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Dec 8 18:17:44 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1984D37B401; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 18:17:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [63.93.4.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5034743EBE; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 18:17:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost.wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.12.1/8.11.6) with ESMTP id gB92HWuF028223; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 19:17:32 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.12.1/8.12.1/Submit) with ESMTP id gB92HWGM028220; Sun, 8 Dec 2002 19:17:32 -0700 (MST)?g (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 19:17:32 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: "Cambria, Mike" Cc: "'Greg 'groggy' Lehey'" , FreeBSD Questions Subject: RE: Interest in diskless booting? If I do not have it already I get the diagnostics for it from the disk manafacturers website, which they all have for free. I then run all the tests on the disk and format it. These are almost always standalone boot images that fit on a DOS floppy. Later on it is always handy if you suspect disk problems -- then you can run the non-destructive drive tests as well. I do as many other kinds of test as possible on new hardware before I start using the machine (usually one I am buiding) -- on the fairly well-known principle that anything electronic or electro-mechanical usually fails early in it's life if it is borderline. This is not accurate, as the cvsup CLIENT keeps directory information for the repository. When the client is run, if a file has been added on the server, it will download it. If a file has changed on the server, it will use the rsync algorithm to synchronize the files. If the client is set to delete files, it will also delete any files that it has and which the server does not. I know because I use it at work to synchronize tens of thousands of images. Rsync works, but it does not scale very well. I had to use cvsupd and cvsup because the memory usage of rsync would grow past 512 MB and it would eventually core dump. It doesn't panic every time I hammer the disk, but only sometimes. This machine has tracked stable for over two years now. Its a fairly vanilla box from Gateway. I was lead towards a couple of PR's, both are still open. > > Can anyone tell me if this hardware or a real bug? Is there anything > > else I could supply which would help in understanding the problem? > take a look at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=42277 and > http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=42235 One of the PR's pointed towards softupdates as a potential cause. I turned it off on /usr and have continued to get panics. Can anyone give me any clue as to what might be happening? Software / hardware / anything? I enclose the (hopefully relevant) dmesg output and two kernel stack traces, both from the last few days. Last built world on Nov 12th. I've had four or five crashes since then. Cheers, Greg =============================================== . FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #1: Tue Nov 12 14:01:18 EST 2002 toor@nucl03.anu.edu.au:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/NUCL03 .
