That's not an error.  Since sound isn't compiled in by default there
aren't bogus /dev entries for it.  Generally, you'll be much more likely
to get something resembling a response if you give more details then
"[it] fails with some kind of error."  Something more like:

When I run ./MAKEDEV snd it fails like this:

$ ./MAKEDEV snd
expr: syntax error
bad node: mknod mixer

The command you want is "./MAKEDEV snd0"
