XML is a subset, but definately not an application. An
application is a markup language defined in terms of SGML or XML.
Calling XML an application puts it in the same box as HTML or
Linuxdoc or Docbook. SGML and XML are both metalanguages sitting
together in a completely different box.

In standards jargon, XML could be called a "profile" of SGML.
