The difficulty was with the Java security/certificate requirements. Anyway , the problem was solved when someone pointed me to a small packet forwarding utility that would allow me to point the applets to the FreeBSD machine which would in turn forward them to the HP; security problem solved! Since then I have upgraded the BSD server and in the process *lost* the source code to that packet forwarding utility (the executable was 'nb', 'np', something like that). Could someone please repost the URL where that can be found? I did an extensive search yesterday and last night with not luck; probably using the wrong keywords :-) Many thanks! Hi, I don't know how to configure shared memory segment under FreeBSD but I solve this problem under Solaris. For SQL Server to run, the operating system kernel must be configured to allow allocation of a shared memory segment at least as large as the SQL Server "total memory" parameter, which defaults to 15MB (7500 2K pages). Under Sun operating system, this parameter must be set in /etc/system file with the following syntax "set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax = nnn" where nnn is at least 15728649 for a default SQL Server. This value must be set higher if you plan to increase total memory. Please, can you forward me ftp site where I can download Sybase Linux version. Perhaps this is why the sybinit program returned an internal error message when trying to boot the server. Interestingly, the dataserver daemon is running and consuming 4069KB of memory. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get at the database with isql. If you don't mind, I have copies of install/errorlog and init/logs/logxxxx.001. To continue, I'm trying to install Sybase (Linux) and FreeBSD 3.1-RELEASE. I've fixed the shared memory problem by recompiling the kernel with SHMMAX and SHMMAXPGS options that Vladimir Silyaev recommended. The latest problem is when sybinit attempts to boot the server. This is what I'm seeing... Running task: update the SQL Server runserver file. Task succeeded: update the SQL Server runserver file. Running task: boot the SQL Server. Calling the shell with '/usr/opt/sybase/install/RUN_SYBASE > /usr/opt/sybase/init/logs/tmp 2>&1 '. waiting for server 'SYBASE' to boot... INTERNAL ERROR: Could not locate message number '514' for product 'SQL Server' in message cache. The "strange" thing is, I do a "ps" and the dataserver is running and has 16MB of memory allocated and using about 7MB. I tried to talk to the dataserver using isql -SSYBASE -Usa -P but got a connection timeout. On the successful side, I did configure the backup server. I went through the whole configuration and it booted! Unfortunately, a message similar to "Warning" this process needs 1024 file descriptors but only has 512" appeared. So I'm wondering, where do I go now? Am I still seeing a shared memory problem? Does the files descriptors offer a clue? Thanks very much for your help.
