You didn't do a `make buildworld`, did you?  You need to.  If you
don't want to, and you're *not* upgrading your system (i.e., you're
just compiling a custom kernel for your current version), you can use
the old method of compiling kernels.  If you are upgrading, you need
to do a buildworld anyway, so just do it before trying to build a
kernel.
