Just for the record (in case someone uses a search engine because he or 
she has a similar problem)...

The solution was thinking a bit more in a Windows way. :-)
After a reboot, I could destroy and set up the zpool without an issue. 
Guess I wasn't used to having to do that anymore. ;-)
