I don't think I misunderstood what was said.  What was said was that
the only supported way of building a kernel was "make buildkernel" and
I was pointing out why that could be an issue.

So the final result of the discussion seems to be:

1) after upgrading sources (ie, make buildworld of any sort) use "make
   buildkernel" to build your kernel

2) any other times, you can use the traditional build process
