Just a thought, but have you looked at rsnapshot? 
http://www.rsnapshot.org/ http://www.freshports.org/sysutils/rsnapshot/

It uses rsync, but manages a directory tree with hard links to unchanged 
files.
It would solve your problem, but in a different way.
