This is broken. I believe it's an "ld" bug. An example would be a shared library "A" that exports the function "foo". The function "foo" depends on the function "fee". The function "fee" is implemented in library "B". A program that imports function "foo" by linking against shared library "A" will *NOT* get an unresolved symbol error at link time, despite not having been linked against library "B" as well. In other words, the current ld does not correctly handle second order dependencies. I have run into this bug while doing production code. The only workaround has been to do one of: 1) First link the program statically. If this succeeds, then relink it dynamically. 2) Modify the dlopen call in crt0's mapping of shared libraries to ensure a preload, so as to cause a runtime error. Currently, the only method of detection is a runtime error if the code *happens* to hit a codepath in the program that results in "foo" calling "fee". That is, it's currently possible for a vendor to deploy defective dynamically linked programs, and not be aware of the problem. This should be a high priority item, I'd think. Currently, I plan to implement workaround #1. Terry Lambert terry@lambert.org --- Any opinions in this posting are my own and not those of my present or previous employers. I don't think any IDE writer will work. But, a fast SCSI adapter is not expensive. The ASUS SC200 would be a good candidate, I think they run about $60. As for which SCSI drives work, someone else will have to answer that. The problem is that -current is not yet released. You can not expect John to go off on a branch in order to let people pretend that -current is -stable. If John's changes need to be shaken out, then you are going to have to put up with instability at some point. If you force him onto a branch, then you are going to end up paying more in the future. The code on the branch will not be nearly as well tested as if it weren't on a branch. You should also consider that John's changes are not gratuitous. They fix bugs. I think th qualitative difference would be that, if the changes were on a branch, then you will have a longer time in which you must live with instabilities and/or unresolved bugs. I, for one, would loudly object to forcing John off onto a branch. The constructive approach would be to work on getting -current stable (AND bug free) enough for a release (IMO). Then your "bladers" can be safe from marbles, and at the same time get to complain about how "3.0 is buggier than the new -current" and "why can't we make -current more stable, given that 3.0 is too far in the past". 8-). Absolutely... - I've only been running current for about a month, but I had a very good idea of what I was getting into (i.e. this sort of problem) > You can not expect John to go off on a branch in order to let people > pretend that -current is -stable. Very true, but it's still amazing the amount of people I see who say "I'm running 3.0 on our [production] server...", very scary ;-) We have 6 production boxes running 2.2.2 through 2.2.6 (which run perfectly) and my own machine which runs 3.0, and runs perfectly - most the time, but enough not to make me go and install it on all the other 6... I think the best thing we can probably do is let John get on with it in peace... :-) Regards, Karl Pielorz To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Sun May 3 05:30:25 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA25894 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Sun, 3 May 1998 05:30:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from colin.muc.de (root@colin.muc.de [193.174.4.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id FAA25887; Sun, 3 May 1998 05:30:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jhs@jhs.muc.de) Received: from jhs.muc.de ([193.174.4.84]) by colin.muc.de with SMTP id <140606-2>; Sun, 3 May 1998 12:41:44 +0200 Received: (from jhs@localhost) by jhs.muc.de (8.8.7/8.8.7) id SAA13837; Sat, 2 May 1998 18:09:21 +0200 (MET DST) (envelope-from jhs) Date: Sat, 2 May 1998 18:09:21 +0200 Message-Id: <199805021609.SAA13837@jhs.muc.de> To: current@FreeBSD.ORG cc: jkh@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: 2.2.5 cd driver _iso_iget crashes on 2.2.6 cd #2 ./dev From: "Julian H. On one I noted: ddb kernel type 12 trap, code=0, Stopped at _iso_iget+0x312: movl %eax,0x8(%ebx) Crash with: mount /cdrom; cd /cdrom/dev; ls -la (first noticed with: mount /cdrom; cd /cdrom; find . -type d -print) I've seen crashes before indexing other non FreeBSD CDs ... so a suggestion for kernel programmers, if I may: The kernel could be less trusting of insertable media foreign file systems (eg 9660), as all sorts of half baked utils on random operating systems can create supposedly more-or-maybe-less compliant iso-9600 filesystems, that may get written to cd, & mounted on FreeBSD. I had a look at man mkisofs (from 2.2.5) but saw no fsck type functionality. If there was such functionality somewhere, it could be tempting to port it, & run it before mounting new CDs (but man mkisofs, suggests lots of non standard variants it'd have to check for, & I'm not volunteering to write a fsck_9660 from scratch :-). I just saw this, it's possible it might be what John thinks, but this same, exact thing happens every time you try to update gimp without being very thorough about erasing the previous gimp before building the new one. Just doing a pkg_delete is *not* good enough. You have to get rid of every possible vestige of gimp, in various places, including any .gimprc directories, any places in /usr/local or /usr/X11R6, stuff like that. The problem is a very enthusiastic configuration script that gimp uses. Go back over your system, be *extremely* certain that all the old gimp is off your system, then build the new one, it'll work. > > Roddie > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-ports" in the body of the message > > ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include any kind of voice or data chuckr@glue.umd.edu | communications topic, C programming, and Unix. 213 Lakeside Drive Apt T-1 | Greenbelt, MD 20770 | I run Journey2 and picnic (FreeBSD-current) (301) 220-2114 | and jaunt (NetBSD). ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Sun May 3 07:55:12 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA07223 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Sun, 3 May 1998 07:55:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: (from sos@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA07203; Sun, 3 May 1998 07:55:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sos) Message-Id: <199805031455.HAA07203@hub.freebsd.org> Subject: Re: IDE CD Writers In-Reply-To: <199805030936.KAA00601@gate.ljis.ml.org> from Lee Johnston at "May 3, 98 10:36:47 am" To: ljohnston@cyberworld.demon.co.uk (Lee Johnston) Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 07:55:00 -0700 (PDT) Cc: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-users@freebsd-uk.eu.org From: sos@FreeBSD.ORG Reply-to: sos@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG In reply to Lee Johnston who wrote: > Hi, > > I'm about to purchase a CD Writer, but which ones does FreeBSD support. > > FreeBSD support SCSI CD Writers but I have a limited budget > and cannot afford a SCSI Controller + A SCSI CD Writer, so I'm limited > to IDE (Proberbly ATAPI) CD-Writers, will any on these work on -current??? Some of the bugs can lurk for years (literally), and even obviously safe changes in my view can be WRONG. Right now, to fix this problem, I am forsaking everything that I can to move forward. If I was sitting idle, I could understand frustration, but right now, we really do need both the sig-(6,11) fixed, and also the split code (for now, Alan Cox from cs.rice.edu came up with a potentially cleaner concept) needs to be in there. Alan's ideas will be better in the future, but right now we need what we have. Also, without this stuff being brought into the public, there is a chance that I wouldn't have gotten as much support. If we didn't need the "fixes", I would have happily backed the code out. If it ends up being a liability for much longer, I'll do something to make things better, but right now, disabiling the split mechanism as-is doesn't fix the problem. I understand the problem, and sometimes things get in my way also. I know that I am about the worst transgressor in this regard, but will try to patch around the signals if I cannot fix it by later on today (right now it is AM EST on Sun.) I do NOT want to get in JB's way, and I have some more, less central VM things to do also. -- John | Never try to teach a pig to sing, dyson@freebsd.org | it just makes you look stupid, jdyson@nc.com | and it irritates the pig. For radio networks you have the same problem, you can't hear while crying so loud. The HDLC/TWA regulates the link access by having a primary and secondaries, only primary is allowed to initiate a transmition. For running a whole network with store & forward relays I implemented a token passing protocol on top of this. For packet protocols like UDP/IP it should be no problem to pass it thru, never tried really to make it tunnel TCP/IP. Yes, I also thought about this, and in most cases a user-land toll should be used to print detailed PCI chip-set information instead of having all those tables in the kernel. There already is PCI_QUIET, which removes the chip-set register dump strings. This could be extended to remove most chip-set IDs, only those that can have multiple host to PCI bridges must be checked for in chipset_probe() ... > heck, NO_SCSI_SENSE isn't even documented, guess it's time to > document/make a proper option... I just tried the new version (pulled down Sunday at about 8:30pm EDT. I tried a make world with softupdates on both the /usr/src and /usr/obj filesystems. My machine rebooted after about a half hour. This bug was tricky, and this is only a partial fix due to the recent conservatism. The version of code that I am running on my development machine has low level object locks for better future SMP support, and in fact is needed for "correct" UP operation also, but the code being committed tonight is only a minimal fix for the problems that people have been running into recently. Initially, it looked like the split code was at fault, and like typical it seems that the problem travelled around in the system :-(. There are about 6-7 ugly problems in the VM code that are serious enough to cause crashes, but this only fixes a couple of them, and I will not be committing the more intrusive, complete and more seriously needed fixes until Saturday. (I have the fixes running on my machine, but again due to conservatism, the fixes will not be available for a while.) The worst of the minor bugs, ended up to be an edge condition not directly in the split code, but for an associated free operation on unneeded swap space. So, be forewarned, there will be some serious improvements in the VM code locking mechanisms coming in on Saturday or Sunday, and there might (will) be some instability (but accompanied by significant improvements) then. The fixes being committed in a few minutes will only fix some minor, but irritating problems (and the "netscape" under X problem.) -- John | Never try to teach a pig to sing, dyson@freebsd.org | it just makes you look stupid, jdyson@nc.com | and it irritates the pig. I haven't searched the rfcs.... i think irda is more like a protocol (or perhaps a bus) than a line discipline. In Windows at least, the driver offers you 'virtual' COM and LPT ports running on the infrared bus. If someone has the time not to write the code, but to suggest a good way (from the architectural point of view) to add IrDA support, that would be great. in my case, i was looking for some simple hack, since i wouldn't have much time to implement it. cheers luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Sun May 3 23:38:38 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id XAA01936 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Sun, 3 May 1998 23:38:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from cimlogic.com.au (cimlog.lnk.telstra.net [139.130.51.31]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id XAA01930 for ; Sun, 3 May 1998 23:38:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jb@cimlogic.com.au) Received: (from jb@localhost) by cimlogic.com.au (8.8.8/8.8.7) id QAA17091 for current@freebsd.org; Mon, 4 May 1998 16:40:55 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from jb) From: John Birrell Message-Id: <199805040640.QAA17091@cimlogic.com.au> Subject: nanosleep time left To: current@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 16:40:55 +1000 (EST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG My understanding of nanosleep in the POSIX standard is that if the time remaining argument is non-NULL, then the time remaining is supposed to be returned, regardless of whether the call was interrupted by a signal or not. So when no signal interrupts the call and it just times out, I expect that the fields in the time remaining will be zeroed. It seems that the kernel implementation of nanosleep doesn't do this. I haven't searched the rfcs.... The port appears as a simple serial device on most machines; and works just fine with things like a Psion 3, 5 and some of their NFS like hacks. The 'real' thing is on http://www.irda.org; a complete 5 layer protocol which seems to re-invent some of the IP, AppleTalk and i2c work. I've started doing some of the bottom layers; but found (about a year ago) that the six IRda compliant devices I had access already diverged at this bottom layer; study-ing the manual reveald that they where IRda SIR physical layer compliant; but not much above (i.e. IrLAP). With the only two exceptions of the Psion and the HP5 laser printer. At this time there was no public domain source/reference implementations available at all. Perhaps this should be re-visited. Anyone is welcome to the bits of source. Dw. > i think irda is more like a protocol (or perhaps a bus) than a line > discipline. I have removed options VM86 so I can now run fbsdboot.exe from DOS7 (Win95 osr 2 / Win95 B / Win97 ---- whatever people call it). I'm not sure what you mean by "is it trapping an invalid segment register" but I think not. What I was getting is the problem reported by Andreas Braukmann below. This goes away when I remove options VM86, and I get no other traps (i.e the kernel boots and I can run normally - which means netscape crashes regularly due to the current VM instability). The problem is with the mmap'd scoreboard file. The file is opened, and used a random number of times (seemed random 8). Then the next time you try to use it, it is gone (closed maybe?), and you try to access memory that is no longer mapped into your program. brian To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Mon May 4 06:45:01 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA00518 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Mon, 4 May 1998 06:45:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from labinfo.iet.unipi.it (labinfo.iet.unipi.it [131.114.9.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id GAA00483 for ; Mon, 4 May 1998 06:44:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from luigi@labinfo.iet.unipi.it) Received: from localhost (luigi@localhost) by labinfo.iet.unipi.it (8.6.5/8.6.5) id OAA06133; Mon, 4 May 1998 14:08:43 +0200 From: Luigi Rizzo Message-Id: <199805041208.OAA06133@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Subject: Re: FreeBSD Development Projects To: wosch@cs.tu-berlin.de (Wolfram Schneider) Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 14:08:43 +0200 (MET DST) Cc: current@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <199805041009.MAA00936@panke.panke.de> from "Wolfram Schneider" at May 4, 98 12:09:15 pm X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Content-Type: text Sender: owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG > The list of FreeBSD Development Projects growing. However, there are huge differences among the projects in this list. Some are well established and have working and supported piece of code (PAO, SMP, some multimedia stuff), some are in development, some other look more like a wishlist and have been around for years without any progress at all (in this category may mention ports to Alpha and Sparc, Token Ring, maybe also documentation, and some of the hacks available from my web page) In order to avoid confusion, i suggest to classify items depending on their status (and the availability of working code or a clean patch for 2.2.X or 3.0 is a useful metric that should not offend anyone). cheers luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Mon May 4 06:49:41 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA01299 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Mon, 4 May 1998 06:49:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from kong.dorms.spbu.ru (kong@kong.dorms.spbu.ru [195.19.252.147]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA01259 for ; Mon, 4 May 1998 06:49:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kong@kong.spb.ru) Received: from localhost (kong@localhost) by kong.dorms.spbu.ru (8.8.8/kong/0.01) with SMTP id RAA06169 for ; Mon, 4 May 1998 17:48:51 +0400 (MSD) (envelope-from kong@kong.spb.ru) Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 17:48:51 +0400 (MSD) From: Hostas Red X-Sender: kong@kong.dorms.spbu.ru To: current@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Still broken? These ports are ideal for AX.25! HDLC/LAPB type protocols are well documented. IP can be tunneled easily, as a matter of fact there are half-duplex TCP/IP networks all over the world using these protocols. If anyone is interested, if I remember correctly, I have a copy of the AX.25 protocol available at my web page [see .sig]... I can also supply the LAPB docs. I think it's about time I dusted off my code and picked it up again... /sys/netccitt is a good starting point. jim -- All opinions expressed are mine, if you | "I will not be pushed, stamped, think otherwise, then go jump into turbid | briefed, debriefed, indexed, or radioactive waters and yell WAHOO !!! | numbered!" - #1, "The Prisoner" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Inet: jbryant@tfs.net AX.25: kc5vdj@wv0t.#neks.ks.usa.noam grid: EM28pw voice: KC5VDJ - 6 & 2 Meters AM/FM/SSB, 70cm FM. http://www.tfs.net/~jbryant ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HF/6M/2M: IC-706-MkII, 2M: HTX-212, 2M: HTX-202, 70cm: HTX-404, Packet: KPC-3+ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-current Mon May 4 08:51:26 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA23098 for freebsd-current-outgoing; Mon, 4 May 1998 08:51:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-current@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from helmholtz.salk.edu (helmholtz.salk.edu [198.202.70.34]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA23093 for ; Mon, 4 May 1998 08:51:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from bartol@salk.edu) Received: from cole.salk.edu (cole [198.202.70.113]) by helmholtz.salk.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id IAA05550; Mon, 4 May 1998 08:51:21 -0700 (PDT) Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 08:51:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Tom Bartol To: Bob Willcox cc: current list Subject: Re: w: /dev//bob: No such file or directory ??? It may be true that AX.25 "works" (for some definition of working) over a half duplex channel, but that's no reason to cripple another medium with badly though-out network architecture. LABP protocols were intended to be used over full duplex, point-to-point links. Early experimentation took advantage of USRT parts and Bell 202 modems that happened to be available. Unfortunately, it persists today, more than a decade later. It is astonshing to me, as a networking professional, that you would make a deliberate choice to misapply one kind of technology into a completely different problem domain. Sure, as an experiment... AX.25 does a very simple CSMA channel access algorithm, but there is no collision detection done (or possible). AX.25 exhibits worse than ALOHA behavior in the face of channel congestion, mostly due to the hidden terminal problem. (That is, even though you listen before you transmit, you might not be able to hear another station transmitting, yet you'll interfere with his transmission.) The original implementations didn't do an exponential backoff (and I suspect many still don't) which produces a very entertaining congestive collapse of loaded channels. There have been some attempts to improve the scheme - using full duplex (split frequency) repeaters to remote the hidden terminal problem, or a distributed polling scheme to arbitrate channel access, but none of them have been adopted because of the inertia of the existing deployed base. Thus, we have doomed ourselves. > If anyone is interested, if I remember correctly, I have a copy of the > AX.25 protocol available at my web page [see .sig]... I can also > supply the LAPB docs. Implement an AX.25 if you want to talk to the existing RF systems, but you can do much better than this starting with a clean slate. AX.25 was an experiment that escaped from the lab, and now the Amateur Radio community is stuck with it. There's no reason to repeat these mistakes with a solution for Infrared wireless links.
