I don't have a Dell machine, but I am given to understand that what I do
have is similar to a Dell Inspiron 5000e.  In any case, it does use the
ATI Rage Mobility 128....

Well, I used XF86-4.0.{1,2,3} (in that order); never had the problem you
describe.  (Hope I never do....)  I've been tracking -STABLE daily for
a while now, and (mostly) tracking -CURRENT as well, in case that's a
factor.  As in your case, XFree86-3 didn't work for me, but -4 has been
pretty good.

Hmmm... I don't have a DVD drive, but I do have a CD-RW, and haven't
experienced that problem, either....

My machine uses the ESS Technology Maestro-2E, so that's not been an
issue for me.
