after adding a shared lib you need to run ldconfig. as in:
/sbin/ldconfig /usr/lib /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/local/lib
you can check shared lib vs app requirements with ldd:
Aspen: {3} ldd `which xterm`
/usr/X11/bin/xterm:
-lXaw.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so.6.0 (0x8039000)
-lXmu.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6.0 (0x806f000)

-lXext.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6.0 (0x8155000)
