I suggested adding the "mergemaster -p" call to the UPDATING sequence
in mid July (my message <20020711195209.S1494@shell.gsinet.sittig.org>
to the -stable list and the thread it was part of hold the details)
and got no answer.

Some time later I filed PR docs/40851 ([PATCH] "mergemaster -p" in
UPDATING's "COMMON ITEMS" section) which went unanswered since then
(unless I misunderstand the special implications of a docs PR, I'm
not subscribed to -doc but categorized the PR this way).

Should I be wrong feel free to close this very PR (or to apply its
idea in a different form). But I do feel that the -STABLE UPDATING
document lacks the "mergemaster -p" step in its general instructions
sequence while it mentions its necessity twice in the YYYYMMDD items.
