I need to install plip between two computers, one of which has a working parallel port and one of which does not. I tried to buy the digital research "drparepp1" card ($10), but looking at netstat -r output it appears that packets go out but not in. Actually I tried this with the cheaper digital research "bidirectional" card ($5), but received the same results. Since the lp(4) manpage says that bugs are plentiful with cheap parallel port cards, I'm wondering if someone can recommend a GOOD parallel port card that they have set up to WORK with plip? The protocol is NOT available while you have ACTUALLY compiled in the options. BTW, my kernel has almost the same options as yours, and it DOES work on my 4.4-PRERELEASE system. Right now. Incidentally, ipfw can also be loaded as a module, not sure whether FreeBSD-4.2 can do that. From what you have just said, I am afraid not. > So far I have tried: > cvsupped and build world, > recompiled kernel multiple times with new config files, > format/reinstall > An example IPFW rule hat generates this error (all do) is "/sbin/ipfw add > pass all from any to any" What you have described above SHOULD normally work. For instance, you built your world and kernel, you installed them, and you ran mergemaster(8), right? AFAICS, the malfunction you have run into seems to indicate that ipfw is **NOT** compiled in your kernel whereas this is REQUIRED in your incantation of FreeBSD (currently 4.2 after reinstallation ?) Surely you followed the correct procedures when compiling your kernel and/or upgrading? Those procedures are extensively covered in the handbook, which you can also find on-line on the main FreeBSD site (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook, chapters 9 and 20). If you still have problems, you might want to post more details about the failing procedure -- please make one attempt at a time. Log on paper what you are doing, in a step-by-step fashion, then post what you have recorded. Though maybe you forgot to run the 'config' command to generate your kernel source. Have you followed these steps (note that the name 'MYKERNEL' is just an example, and you should actually name it something suitable to your host, like your hostname)? Change into the kernel config file directory. # cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf Create a kernel config file suitable to your environment. # cp GENERIC MYKERNEL ; vi MYKERNEL , etc Run config(8) to generate the kernel source code. # /usr/sbin/config MYKERNEL Change into the build directory. # cd ../../compile/MYKERNEL Compile the kernel. # make depend # make Install the new kernel. # make install The above is pretty much straight from the handbook. We have a volume, /users, composed of da1 and da4 (for about 800G of space), that when the device is unmounted, the system reboots itself. 2) Using setquota (on the above volume) causes the system (rather access to /users) to grind to a halt (with no error messages in dmesg or /var/log/messages). The only way to get out of this is a reboot of the system, which forces a fsck :-( The symptom pops up after adding a quota for myself, and then moving on to another user. 3) I'll describe the hardware setup below, but we are using a IBM eSeries server with a Qlogic FC-AL HBA to connect to a raid to store data. Using sysctl or sysinstall, after the (above) vinum volume has been mounted, causes a kernel panic and a reboot. Anybody else have experience with a QLogic ISP 2200 HBA? Our setup. IBM eSeries xServer 340 (formerly the Netfinity 4500R) * 2 1.0GHz processors (kernel is in uni-processor mode until I figure out what else the kernel config needs (simply defining SMP and APIC_IO hangs the system on boot)). * 2 Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 (fxp) cards * 1 AMD ethernet card (pcn) * 1 Qlogic ISP 2200 (isp) HBA * 1.1GB of memory * 1 9GB system disk This box is just one big monster NFS server for about 250 clients right now (SGI IRIX, IBM AIX, and RedHat Linux). We've set the following sysctl.conf variables kern.maxfiles=150000 vfs.vmiodirenable=1 Below is our kernel config Once I get a crash dump (of the running kernel below) I'll send that on. Perhaps FreeBSD is complaining that it cannot find a /sbin/mount_cfs command. I've never used CODA, but I would imagine that the port for it must have the necessary tools to mount the filesystem. There is a README in /sys/coda that may prove of some use. Also, for your reference, you use the dev/MAKEDEV script to create device entries. There is, however, no cfs entry in this script. I have rebuilt the latest Qt. Any ideas? Upgrade to kde-2.2. I was having things like what I thought was a race condition on my SMP system. I could run kde-2.1.1 without any problems for days. I upgraded to kdelibs-2.1.2 on 4.4-rc1 and the system would be ok for a while (30-180) minutes. Then, it my system would totally lock up. It was painful to upgrade to 2.2 but most of those problems have been taken care of now. Kde-2.1 had more than its share of problems. Kent > > Thanks > Nadav > > PS. Sorry, Ted but I fail to see how your reply addresses even one of the concerns raised in my original mail. I'm perfectly aware of the concept of a dedicated server and I do know the RFCs (I'm hostmaster for an ISP here in the UK). My point was that although I know how to do it, it's not documented anywhere, the steps in the handbook will not result in a working secondary nameserver, and it could be a lot easier. Also, the steps required are now available in the archives for this list. Are you saying that an extra layer of security is pointless, so chroot'ing named _should_ be hard ? Can't tell you what everyone else was saying, but I'd say since FreeBSD's jail(8) is available, your best option is to run named(8) a jail(8). chroot'ing can be broken out of if the attacker gains root. Thanks. do as the emails tell you: go to the right directory and do "vi -r filename". Then, I don't recall correctly to be honest, write it to /deve/null if you don't want to keep it and quit vi. The reason why it takes so long is probably that the vi-recover-program is trying to use sendmail to inform you, but that you don't have an internet connection yet (is that possible?) so it waits for dns-time-outs. I had a generic PCI video card on-board which I swapped out for an AGP card (ATI All-in-Wonder) and now the machine no longer exhibits this problem. aV To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Aug 19 16:33:16 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from viemta04.chello.at (viemta04.chello.at [195.34.133.54]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A301637B407 for ; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 16:33:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from csab7810@uibk.ac.at) Received: from sentekk1 ([213.47.233.121]) by viemta04.chello.at (InterMail vK.4.03.02.00 201-232-124 license dd105b629cb94503e20ad828d0e9d2ee) with SMTP id <20010819233310.RIRP671.viemta04@sentekk1> for ; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 01:33:10 +0200 Message-ID: <004f01c12907$69d19fa0$0701a8c0@sentekk1> From: "jl" To: Subject: freebsd handbook chapter 4.4.1.1 - 4.4.1.2 Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 01:33:55 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4522.1200 Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG dear sir, the above given chapters [http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html] tell the newbie (like me ;) how to use make & install; still i can`t "make install" anything for my freebsd-pc is still offline and "make" is only checking some ftps; the cdrom has been mounted [ # mount /cdrom]. where can i find a config file for the make thingy, to tell my pc only to "get" stuff from the cd? best wishes, hannes To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Aug 19 16:38:38 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com (mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [206.29.169.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5968837B403 for ; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 16:38:29 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tedm@toybox.placo.com) Received: from tedm.placo.com (nat-rtr.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [206.29.168.154]) by mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) with SMTP id f7JNcLb48302; Sun, 19 Aug 2001 16:38:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tedm@toybox.placo.com) From: "Ted Mittelstaedt" To: "Mike Meyer" Cc: Subject: RE: IDS Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 16:38:19 -0700 Message-ID: <000501c12908$072ab0c0$1401a8c0@tedm.placo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3155.0 In-Reply-To: <15230.58997.927550.888016@guru.mired.org> Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG >-----Original Message----- >From: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG >[mailto:owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG]On Behalf Of Mike Meyer >Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2001 3:05 PM >To: Ted Mittelstaedt >Cc: questions@FreeBSD.ORG >Subject: RE: IDS > > >[Context lost to top posting.] > Applicable context that was lost was included in the respose posted. >Ted Mittelstaedt types: >> then please consider this carefully. We already have many ports in FreeBSD >> that >> have been abandonded by their maintainers and cause a lot of trouble for >> users. > >We do? While I sometimes run into one that's broken, a note to the Yes. It's not always immediately obvious because the Project tends to prune them out or get them reassigned so you don't see them for long. For example, did you ever know that there was once a port of Ingres that Julian maintained? That got pruned a long time ago from FreeBSD 2 when they changed something in FreeBSD that broke it. You can argue all you want that nobody uses Ingres, but that is specious because since it's not available, of course practically no one would use it. Actually, I'll admit that Ingres is a bad example because it has a direct replacement. And no, I'm not keeping a list, and yes ports that get abandonded by one maintainer often do get picked up by another rather than dropped. But sometimes it takes a few releases. For another example, I remember when the OpenLDAP port was broken by some change in FreeBSD it took at least one release for that to get fixed. >maintainer ("make -V MAINTAINER" gets the email address) usually gets >it dealt with. Things that fail to build on bento tend to get pruned >if the maintainer doesn't deal with the problem. > >If you've got a long list of broken ports, possibly you should notify >the various maintainers to see if you can get the problem fixed. > Generally I've found that simply waiting until the next FreeBSD version and then trying again will take care of the problem because enough other people complain about it. But, sometimes the problems aren't immediately obvious. For example, take ucd-snmp. It's a long and involved and complex program. In FreeBSD 4.1, it worked perfectly, I had it running for up to a year on a router. In FreeBSD 4.2, it was changed to a newer version that built fine and all that, responded to queries and all that. But, 6 months after upgrading the router to 4.2 I discovered that every once in a while the snmp daemon would go nuts, consuming all available free ram in the router. I looked into what they had changed and discovered that the additions were totally inapplicable to probably like 95% of the people would would ever want to run it. So I went back to the older version and found a number of problems compiling it, I eventually fixed those and got it built and it's been fine ever since. Now, it took probably 9 months for me to even document that a problem exists, and verify that it wasn't due to the switch from 4.1 FreeBSD to 4.2 FreeBSD, and by then version 4.3 FreeBSD was out, and the current ucd-snmp was yet an even newer version. It's highly unlikely that reporting this to the ucd-snmp developers will get anyone to investigate because I never found the trigger and I certainly can't put a buggy version back on a production router to investigate further. Right now that router is up to version 4.3 and with the old version of snmp on it, because I know I can trust that version. Maybe 2 or 3 years from now I'll try the version of snmp that's current then. But I've spent probably 30 hours over the 6 months that the buggy version was running just responding to customer complaints that were caused by it, not to mention the time creating a fix, and at this point I can't spend any more money on it, nor can I afford to risk the damage to the perception of reliability of our network that testing the new version would cause. And there's no other router I have that is a tenth as busy as that one, all of the rest of our routers are running the newer version of snmp without problems. For another example, how about all those ports that have error messages about them being insecure, like uw-imap? What's that all about? I guess the maintainer is so unresponsive there to fixing the security bugs that the Project has just thrown up their hands in disgust and slapped in warning labels. Now, I don't want to give the impression that the FreeBSD ports collection is full of bugs and trouble because it's not. All I'm trying to get across is that when you or anybody decide to become a maintainer of a port, you need to understand that by placing that software into FreeBSD, that your casting the "veneer of worthiness" on the software and that there's a lot of people who are going to start looking at using this for production environments as a result. If you are doing this on a lark, or conditionally to where you will stop doing it if it takes up too much time, then your just setting up traps that are going to harm those of us who start using your port. It would be better if the port was never done because then we would be steered into other similar packages who are maintained by people that _are_ committed. Shall I turn the question on it's head and throw it right back to you: Are you saying that the extra layer of security is a requirement so the admin can be lazy and never bother applying security patches? Note that I didn't say that all those things make it so that a sandbox is worthless. I'm just saying that those things are what your supposed to be doing ANYWAY and if you do them then you may not need the extra effort and security of a sandbox. What's appropriate for a major ISP, espically one that makes a nuisance of itself by sheltering spammers or other nasty things, is not always appropriate for s tiny ISP with 100 customers stuck out in the middle of nowhere behind a 56K link, or a corporation with 50 users, or an individual with a network of 6 machines at home. All 4 of those should be doing all those things but I would say that the sandbox is really only going to benefit the first one. The smaller organizations don't have time to do everything and so must pick and choose what they spend their manpower on, and backups, regular patching and a recovery plan are much more important. After all, systems can crash from lots of things not just attackers. All well and good. But aren't all truly unique files (i.e. no hard links) in a file system supposed to have unique inodes, even if the files in question are directories (i.e. just special files ) ? The tmp, usr, proc, and var directories seem to be behaving like unique directories as they should be, and mnt2 isn't mounted to the same file system as mnt3, certainly. So what gives? I'm scratching my head anyway. Is there a short answer to this puzzle? I've been lurking here for a while picking up useful tips. I installed fbsd a couple of months ago and have just about everything running ok, but there are two things I still can't get to work properly. 1: identd server on my freebsd box. I have both my computers, one with fbsd and one with windows, behind a D-link Dl-704 ADSL router. I have forwarded port 113 to my bsd box as I'd like to run an identd server on it. I've tried a number of different servers with no luck. Right now I'm running the internal one, with a "fake" output set so it will reply the chosen username and systemname no matter what. I can telnet to port 113 of the box and I get a connect. As soon as type something I get the message 0 , 0 : ERROR : X-INVALID-REQUEST Connection closed by foreign host. I don't really know if this message is supposed to be there or if something is wrong. Anyhow, even though I can connect to port 113 identd does not work (irc still displays my nick with a ~ in front of my "ident", and I get a "no response from identd server" when i try to connect.) This might be far fetched but does anyone have any advice? I read somewhere midentd was recommended but I cant find a freebsd build... 2: My logitech usb mouse. I've tried lots of different solutions but I cant find a good one anywhere. I got it "semi" working. I can use three mousebuttons and move the pointer. I would also like to be able to use at least the wheel. In addition the mousepointer stops responding very often and I have to click a button to get it to respond again. This goes for both console and X.
