A little-known fact is that you can install any PCI Express = expansion card in any=20 PCI Express slot.=20 For example, you can install an x1 expansion card in any kind of = PCI Express slot;=20 it doesn=92t need to be installed in an x1 slot.=20 So, if you have an x4 expansion card but your motherboard = doesn=92t have an=20 x4 PCI Express slot, no problem; simply install it in an x8 or = x16 slot. The same holds true for =93bigger=94 cards. For example, you can = install an x16=20 video card in a =93smaller=94 slot. (The slot, however, must = have its rear side open;=20 otherwise, the bigger expansion card won=92t fit. It is up to = the motherboard manufacturer=20 whether or not to provide slots with their rear side open.) The = only disadvantage is=20 that it will only have the maximum bandwidth provided by the = slot; i.e., if you install=20 an x16 video card in an x4 slot, it will have only x4 bandwidth = available. ..." -- from "Everything You Need to Know About the PCI Express" - by = Gabriel Torres (July 12, 2012) = http://hardwaresecrets.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-pci-expre= ss/4/ Has anyone tried an x1 expansion (sound) card, esp. manufactured by = Creative Labs,=20 in either an x4 or x8 slot? I'd like to know how it has worked out for you, and how it has affected = your system's other slots? Thanks, C Gray frankfenderbender@council124.org
