I just joined to comment on this. I just hit an issue with GCC not wanting to work on ARM and some programs by default use GCC. My case was mc needing libcrypt which wants GCC and GCC won't build. I posted in freebsd-questions and got an answer from Matthew that a long-term solution is in the works. I've got the ports tree from i386 in my Pi and some things work fine, not everything.
