Hello, Pam authentication is broken in ftpd in 4.0 release. Apparently, the problem is as a result of pam' rhost field not being filled up, which leads to incorrect behavior of pam_cleartext_pass_ok. Another bug is that ftpd calls skeyaccess on its on when generating the prompt. To be consistent this should go through pam too. Thanks, Igor.
