A reasonably recent multimedia API would be Sun's Java Media Framework - 
available at 
http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/guide/JMFTOC.html

 From a high design perspective, for the higher level parts of a 
multimedia API, IMHO its pretty good.
