Try,

makemap hash virtusertable <sourcefile.txt

(Where 'sourcefile.txt' contains your 'real' virtual user table, which
makemap will then convert into a hash database for sendmail).

What terminal are you using? - Are you logged in at the console? - or via a
PC / Serial terminal etc.? - What program do they 'wrap' in, or which shell
are you using?
