As with /etc/defaults/rc.conf you should not modify /boot/defaults/
loader.conf. You can just create a /boot/loader.conf with the overrides 
that you need. IIRC early 3.x bootloaders did not work this way. I 
think the changeover was at some point after 3.2-RELEASE.
