The Promise ATA RAID solution is software, and now supported (to some 
degree) in 4.2

Yes.  However these drives are actually a pretty bad deal; when a 5GB 
tape is ~$40 the drive suddenly looks a lot less economical.   Try 
finding a secondhand DAT or Exabyte 8mm drive.
