Are you using Xwindows?  SOmeone accidentally packaged X on a machine with
an extended utmp username field.  It causes this sort of damage.  The
solution appears to be to install the version for 2.1.7, available at
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/XFree86/2.1-STABLE.
