It is thus useful for syncthing but not very much for squid. > it also integrates nicely with rc(8) and is part > of the base system. I'm aware that daemon(8) is used in rc.d scripts to start some third-party software like consul and strongswan. This would set the resources free from the gnome-shit which Xfce runs in the background. Is it still possible? If you run this kind of configuration, can you answer some questions for me? 1. What good-looking WM would you recommend from the ports? I had a quick look at fvwm and was appalled how dated and ugly it looks to the modern eye. Even twm is better aesthetically but not rich enough for me. A minimal number of dependencies is an advantage. 2. Without a full-featured DE, how do you setup Xserver parameters? I've long forgotten how to configure multiple keyboard layouts, nice fonts, various hotkeys (layout switching etc). Is it still done via the global xorg.conf or is it possible on a per-user basis? So, please share your success stories. --=20 Victor Sudakov, VAS4-RIPE, VAS47-RIPN 2:5005/49@fidonet http://vas.tomsk.ru/ --HcAYCG3uE/tztfnV Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJfOMeXAAoJEA2k8lmbXsY0nmQIAIhMqxBSw1lf7xJXVczhguse Pqist37U/m8X+yfsH+PfdWITn8xrJ6OKGakCL2c2DnA9Ca+MrKuRkC2Us4pokDNS edV/uw8UhSJMJpr1D6h3zOY1qXjOZGlNzT9FGPeaf4WzF4Afxxre2/ZzTNlc9ubf v9DCQhc9Z7xSPCVVMRv9L1kbuBs/F8EFLlMj26fQIh2jmpsIdo19NTMbySqDf2Ma zh+m8JisSNLWnhhj01iuYfgSfsSasiwJF5O+R/eeMkYBj0gRc076BGfdis3u4OgJ G/0GS701+BjqyXqgh5SXpZk5KoLRdXCwqx4VWrtGr6E7RlSMU8MgIs5tEZ1VNXI= =K/rG -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --HcAYCG3uE/tztfnV-- From owner-freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Sun Aug 16 06:29:24 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0E8983B27CF for ; Depending on your magic level, a tiling window manager could be interesting. If you're not that magic (like me), maybe fvwm-2 (Motif style) or IceWM will do? Personally, and even though I have tried many WMs, my personal favorite is WindowMaker (with non-default configuration, of course). Because I'm too stupid, the magic of tiling window managers didn't pour onto me yet. I've heared only good things about them, though. ;-) > 1. What good-looking WM would you recommend from the ports? A minimal number of dependencies is an advantage. In this case, IceWM isn't a bad choice. It supports several themes, as well as a Beastie-style "start button". It does not automatically "discover apps", i. e., you'll have to create your own menu file, but that's not a disadvantage in my opinion. The nice thing about IceWM is that you can configure all aspects easily with simple text-based configuration files. If you want to look very professional, add a Mac OS X wallpaper and the Warlock Bar (wbar). I've tried that, it actually works. ;-) > 2. Without a full-featured DE, how do you setup Xserver parameters? I've > long forgotten how to configure multiple keyboard layouts, nice fonts, > various hotkeys (layout switching etc). Is it still done via the global > xorg.conf or is it possible on a per-user basis? Today, most of this stuff is done automatically by X itself. If you want to force a specific configuration (especially a non-standard one, like a non-US keyboard), there's still the way of partial configuration files in the xorg.conf.d/ subdirectory. Keyboard layouts can be managed easily with xinput, the successor of xmodmap. And switching layouts can be done with IceWM keyboard bindings. For everything that you don't want to be a global setting, there's always ~/.xinitrc and/or ~/.xsession; you can use programs like xinput and xrandr to configure things after user login. -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... It looks fantastic, is minimalist and works great. I actually use it in my FreeBSD vm. You can configure it by copying the rc.lua file under /usr/local/etc/xdg/ to ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua (after mkdir ~/.config/awesome). The only changes I usually need in ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua are : 1) switch editor from nano to vim 2) switch terminal from xterm to terminator. Of course, you would like to have terminator installed upfront : portsnap auto cd /usr/ports/x11/terminator make config-recurive make install clean Restart. Right clicking on the desktop will now get you terminator. Right clicking on the desktop will now get you terminator. The only slight objection regarding terminator would be that it adds several Gnome-related and Gtk dependencies. If you buikld it from source, even more stuff will be compiled and installed (as build dependencies). So maybe using "pkg install terminator" will be a _little_ more convenient? ;-) Managing several terminal sessions in one terminal window, even if it's just ye olde xterm, can be accomplished with lightweight tools such as screen and tmux. -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... It should not be possible for the user to login (meaning, they should not be able to open an interactive session as that user). I did found some manuals that explain how to generate the password, especially when using different hashing than the default one and store such password in the master.passwd. That could work, I just hoped that there is a command line utility that is able to verify the password in the same way the system or any service would do without the trickery of fetching the password from master.passwd, verifying the encryption scheme, encrypting the password with the same scheme, then finally testing if they are the same. I have no problem with getting a new monitor and a new nVidia-based graphics card. I currently have an Acer E24Y monitor (24" max. resolution 1920x1080) connected to a nVidia GT510 (max. resolution 1920x1080) via HDMI running on a FreeBSD 12.1-pl8 machine. The host hardware is a Ryzen 5 2600X running on a MSI B450 Tomahawk (MS-7C02) with 24 GB of DDR-2667 RAM and a 1 TB SSD. I am also using FreeBSD 12.1-pl8 with x11/xorg-1.20.8_3,1 and x11/nvidia-driver-390-390.138, x11-wm/xfce4-4.14.5 installed. Everything works perfectly with the above hardware and OS/desktop config. Everything is the most recent updates available as of an hour or two ago. Since I have had bad experiences in the past of *SOME* people (most don't do this) giving advice, on this list, that is worse than useless, please note that I will ignore any answer that involves any of the following (any other suggestion is more than welcome): * Switching OS's (Linux will earn you negative points) or OS major versions * Using something different from nVidia (which works just *FINE* despite many false claims to the contrary). The reason is I have used nothing but nVidia on FreeBSD from 2001 on and I have heard far too many horror stories on this list (and elsewhere) about graphics/drm-kmod (especially when coupled with wayland). * Switching desktop environments. (Every other one is far too heavy weight and has too many dependencies on underlying libraries that have Linuxisms that are not transparently compatible with FreeBSD's kernel as it currently is. On the other hand, using a raw WM and building my own DIY desktop environment is more work
