Think I've got it - from config.log:

configure:22410: c++ -o conftest -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-I/usr/local/inc
lude -L/usr/local/lib -pthread -L/usr/local/lib/ conftest.cpp -lpt   >&5
/usr/bin/ld: warning: libsasl2.so.2, needed by /usr/local/lib/libpt.so,
not foun
d (try using -rpath or -rpath-link)
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_client_step'
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_client_new'
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_client_start'
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_dispose'
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_client_init'
/usr/local/lib/libpt.so: undefined reference to `sasl_listmech'
configure:22416: $? = 1

Looks like I need to reinstall pwlib-1.12.0_3,1 and see if that fixes
the undefined reference.
