All Twain does is give applications a 'defined' path to talk to the drivers
for applications to pull in scanns. If you have a HP scanner and want to use
Twain in ThumbsPlus, thumbs just uses the Twain interface to call the HP
drivers.

You are better off just trying to find drivers for the scanner and don't worry
about Twain.
