I found this URL while Googling for the same problem. After adding the shadow.byname and shadow.byuid lines to my Makefile, the linux clients were able to log into the FreeBSD NIS server. http://dbforums.com/t582766.html Do pay special attention to hidden characters when editing the Makefile. If you're using vi, you will want to use "set list".
