As I recall, the consensus was that there is a bug in sppp. I posted a mesage to this effect a while back and sent a trace to Hellmuth but he didn't find anything wrong. I couldn't reproduce the bug at all (until now) so I let the matter rest. I recently installed 2.2.7 and re-did all my isdn config files and found that if the interface is configured *without* debug at boot-time, it switches itself down again exactly 11 seconds after being switched up ie. exactly what you said in your mail. Switching debug on solves the problem. Gerald -- "A man's got to know his limitations..." Yes, this is the usual method in case the isdn interface is the default route.(defaultrouter in /etc/rc.conf - I don't know if this has changed in 2.2.7) But OTOH it shouldn't do any harm if you set the default route later (isdn.rc). Any idea where to look for this? It's a FreeBSD 2.2.6-kernel in a 2.2.5-environment with i4b 0.63. I haven't investigated yet, but it seems to be a reproducable problem if i4b gets a call from a system it is currently calling out to. When falling back from their prefered "MS-CHAP" authentication to "CHAP" the Win95 network won't be able to figure things like DNS, gateway and some other stuff they prefer to get from the server. So you'll need to configure those things manually. It should work then. We should support MS-CHAP in isppp (the standard NetBSD PPP supports it). To do this, you will have to: 1) Configure the second box to use the FreeBSD box as the default gateway 2) Configure the FreeBSD box kernel to act as a gateway. Set GATEWAY="YES" in /etc/rc.conf (I believe) and make a new /kernel 3) Set up natd with ipfw (on the FreeBSD box) to do address translation on outgoing IP packets from the local address to the address supplied by your ISP and to translate back the incoming replies. I suspect step 3) is what's failing in your case, because the current versions of I4B do not inform NATD of the new address when it arrives during call setup to your ISP. One way of doing this (as I discovered after receiving help from the I4B gang:) is to 'kill -HUP' NATD _after_ the call has been set up. This can be automated. Another way of getting NATD updated is to wait for the next version of I4B and install that. I think there is a patch for this exact purpose on it's way. A route to the other side of a PPP-connection should be added automatically as soon as you configure a device as a PPP-device: ifconfig isppp0 link1 debug up You need to add a defaultroute to the remote side (or if you wish, add a defaultroute over your isppp0-interface, although routing over IPs is "cleaner"), which can be done for example in /etc/rc.isdn or /etc/start_if.isppp0. > zum zeiten kann ich mit meinem 2ten rechner den bsd anpingen und telneten > aber ich komme von ihm nicht in das internet . > > probiert habe ich es schon in jeglicher form mit nat ohne nat > mit firewall , ohne bzw. mit oder ohne allem . > > tcpdump sieht den icmp request aber es kommt kein reply. > This is a very inprecise description of your problem. Does your ISP route 1 single IP to you or more IPs or even a subnet ? In case you are using more than 1 "real" (non-private) IP, all you might be missing is "sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1", which is automatically performed at boot-time if you specify gateway_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf (or gateway="YES" in /etc/sysconfig if you still use sysconfig). -- bye, logix Sleep is an abstinence syndrome wich occurs due to lack of caffein. Look at the i4b directory: - -rw-r--r-- 1 root bin 19513 2 Jul 21:10 FAQ - -rw-r--r-- 1 root bin 14159 10 Jul 10:49 README These are really interesting. There are some user contributed files in "i4b/contrib", they can help for automation and conversions. "i4b/etc/" contains the script "rc.isdn", which can be called at boot time to initialise i4b. i4b has also created the directory "/etc/isdn", and there "sample", which contains most needed config files. But it's easy to do: You'll have to configure the right b1protocol in isdnd.rc: b1protocol The B channel layer 1 protocol used for this con- nection. The keyword is mandatory. The currently configurable values are: hdlc HDLC framing. raw No framing at all (used for telephony). This probably won't work, as the TelCo will make their charging decission on the bearer capabilities. This is an outstanding issue, see layer3/i4b_l2if.c: /* XXX * currently i have no idea if this should be switched by * the choosen B channel protocol or if there should be a * separate configuration item for the bearer capability. * For now, it is switched by the choosen b protocol (-hm) */ You will have to patch that function to send the right BC (check, if your phone rings, when you dial that number). There is an example of how to code it in there, as "voice" may be used by the isdntest utility. So this should answer Hellmuths question above: yes, it should be a separate configuration item, with a reasonable default depending on the B channel protocol.
